The octane number shows how well petrol resists knocking, the uncontrolled detonation inside the cylinder. The higher the number, the more stable the fuel under compression.
What the manufacturer recommends
The required grade is usually printed inside the fuel filler flap or in the owner's manual. If an engine is designed for AI-92, filling up with AI-95 brings no noticeable benefit. Conversely, low-octane petrol shortens the life of a turbocharged engine.
